Preparing for China

How do people prepare to go across the world?

I cannot believe that I'm going to China in less than two weeks. It's crazy! I have my packing list, the itinerary, and we even went out for food the other night (which was amazing, by the way)

Sichuan Gourmet in Squirrel Hill- 1900 Murray Ave, Pittsburgh, PA
... and for some reason I can't grasp the fact that I will be there so soon! I don't know how to prepare myself mentally. I have never been out of the country, yet along to the other side of the world!

So, why am I going to China, you ask? I am doing a Panther Program called Innovate where students are given the opportunity to take a class about topics in globalization and technology, and then they get to travel to China over spring break for ten days. It is all about learning business and innovation in another country, and developing your personal skills. As an industrial engineer, I jumped all over this opportunity! Like I said, I have not been out of country before, so I don't think going abroad for an entire semester is ideal for me....but spring break? Heck yah I can do that! So at first I was just like "oh okay I can go to China that is awesome," but now I'm pretty much more excited than I had ever thought I would be! Let me explain that a little... When I thought of study abroad before, I immediately thought of Greece or Europe, somewhere known for the nature and beauty. When I picked China, my mom was pretty nervous and of course suggested France or Rome instead. However, going to class and learning about what China has grown into has really made me value the opportunity I have. So, needless to say, I'm pumped.

I've learned about doing business in China, gender roles, dynasties, economics, and so much more already. I can't even begin to think how much more I will learn when I am actually over there. These next couple of weeks I will be mentally preparing myself to go abroad for the first time, so stay tuned! See you in China!
